Ferrous chlorate metering pump

Peristaltic metering pump solves ferrous chlorate injection line pressure challenge in wastewater treatment plant

A wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) needed to replace a diaphragm metering pump that doses ferrous chlorate into a transfer line that feeds municipal sludge to the plant’s digesters.

Its existing pump was not able to handle the line pressure to inject the proper amount of ferrous chlorate required for the process. The new pump selected easily handles the application. Based on the success, the facility purchased a second pump to transfer ferrous chlorate from the main storage tank to the buffer tank and reports significant improvement in operations as a result.

Higher than expected line pressure creates challenges

The WWTP plant had difficulties dosing the ferrous chlorate into the transfer line because the existing diaphragm metering pump struggled to overcome the higher-than-expected line pressure. The metering/dosing pump’s ability to convey ferrous chlorate into the transfer line against varying, higher ranges of pressure is important since the consistency of the sludge pumped into the digesters can vary from day to day.

Pump features well suited for chemical feed, metering, and injection applications.

The customer identified through reference, that NETZSCH’s PERIPRO® peristaltic pump as a potential replacement and requested for the trial of the pump. NETZSCH’s PERIPRO® peristaltic pump is rated for pressures of up to 10 bar. The pump for this application, PERIPRO® model I10/2.7, was sized for 7 Bar to overcome these issues.

Seal-less PERIPRO® Peristaltic Metering Pumps are ideal for dosing applications in wastewater treatment plants.

Compatible materials for dosing the chemicals

PERIPRO® peristaltic pumps from NETZSCH are the advanced pump technology with large roller and durable hose materials and are particularly well suited for the application since the only medium-wetted parts are the hose and pipe connections.

The materials used in the PERIPRO® are engineered to be compatible with a wide variety of products and suitable for many applications across a wide range of industries. Available material options increase the range of applications, and all feature excellent performance to meet challenging applications that involve abrasive, corrosive, and/or shear-sensitive media across a wide temperature range.

PERIPRO® features extremely robust construction materials, which optimize the pump for demanding applications. This robust construction is what makes PERIPRO® able to support the higher line pressures required by the wastewater treatment plant. One example is PERIPRO®’s high-quality hose, made with a unique manufacturing process that helps facility owners save the costs on hose consumption. The hose is comprised of an extruded inner layer with high-density textile reinforcement and a precisely machined outer layer. Controlled tolerances ensure optimal compression along with fast and easy installation during maintenance.

The pump’s patented XXL roller technology reduces energy consumption and increases efficiency. Due to the size of the rollers, the hose is optimally compressed. This leads to higher efficiency, lower energy consumption, and a longer hose life. The starting torque is minimal and the operation is simple. Other unique features include integrated oversized drive shaft bearings designed to support radial loads inside the pump housing vs. the gearbox or motor, large metal rollers with oversized bearings, and a safe and reliable connection system.

After installing the pump, the WWTP reported no further issues. They ordered a second pump after the successful completion of the trial period. The additional PERIPRO® pump, model I10/1.4 is used to pump ferrous chlorate from the main storage tank to the buffer tank.
